Officer Tyrrell was involved in an automobile collision when he struck a van that made a left turn in front of him. The driver of the van was killed. Officer Tyrrell received numerous injuries including a broken leg and arm and a fractured skull, however, he received no internal injuries due to his shock plate absorbing the brunt of the impact.
