Officer Stanway along with his K9 partner and four other officers were attempting to subdue and handcuff a suspect during a domestic violence situation. Attempts to subdue the suspect with chemical spray and nightsticks were futile. After the suspect was finally pinned down and handcuffed, Officer Stanway noticed he was bleeding profusely. He had been slashed with a knife in the face and neck. The knife missed his juglar but cut through his face into his cheek.
