Officer Smith was on routine patrol when he attempted to stop driver for running a red light. The subject stopped but took off when Officer Smith got out of his car. The subject drove on for a few more blocks, stopped his car and got out and fled on foot carrying a large plastic bag. Officer Smith chased the subject and called for him to stop. The subject dropped the bag and hid behind a tree. He then pulled a .38 caliber handgun from his waistband and fired 5 shots at Officer Smith. One round struck Officer Smith in the right upper chest.
