Sgt. Caspers responded to a 2 a.m. “suspicious persons” call at a local retail store. As his patrol unit came to a stop in front of the store, Caspers stepped from the car to check if the door was locked. He “walked no more than two steps” when the suspect opened the front door, catching Caspers totally off guard, firing four shots at the officer. One slug, from the .38, struck Caspers on the left chest pocket. Caspers returned fire at the fleeing man before calling for assistance. The .38 slug was retrieved from Caspers” Second Chance® vest, directly over the heart area
