Officer Shipman and a fellow officer, Daniel Messick, were shot during an ambush when they responded to a call at an apartment building where a suspect had barricaded himself. Officer Shipman was shot several times and Officer Messick was shot once in the leg. The SWAT Team was called in and after an hours long standoff during whicvh the SWAT Team used a robot, flash bangs and tear gas in an effort to get the suspect to surrender, the suspect ultimately shot himself.
