Officer Eric McElhaney made a traffic stop in Greenwood, Indiana. Thinking that something was wrong, he called Officer Jay Arnold for back up. The driver was put in handcuffs and the passenger was asked to exit the vehicle. After a brief argument, the passenger pulled out a stolen handgun and began firing at the two officers. The suspect proceeded to shoot Officer McElhaney several times and shot and disabled Officer Arnold’s radio. Both officers fired back, resulting in the suspect’s death at the scene. Officer McElhaney is still recovering from his serious injuries, while Officer Arnold has returned to regular duty. These officers handled this incident with outstanding bravery and professionalism, and are true “Hometown Heroes”
