The incident occurred during a hostage rescue entry by SWAT which ultimately turned out to be a planned ambush by the suspect. Over 29 rounds from .45, 9mm, and .380 firearms were fired at the team as they moved through the house looking for the hostage. Corporal LeBlanc was shot in the torso with a .45 bullet. The bullet entered his left side just above his vest panel, tore through his lung and lodged in his upper back.
