Corporal Speck along with another officer was investigating the report of a missing 15-year-old girl when they encountered two suspects in a motel along with the girl. One of the suspects got into a struggle with the officers inside the motel while the other suspect tried to flee the scene. The officers chased the suspect, who wielded a stolen .38 cal handgun and began to fire without warning. Two shots were fired at the officers. One-shot grazed Corporal Speck on the upper left arm. A second shot struck Corporal Speck on the right front pocket hitting the edge of his IMPAC™ ballistic plate and shredding his notepad. A third shot was fired with the suspect taking his own life. Corporal Speck was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
