Officer McKeithan was shot in the chest and right wrist during the arrest of a subject on a felony warrant. After shooting McKeithan and another officer (shot in the leg), the subject barracaded himself in his house and held off police for almost 12 hours before turning his gum on himself. Officer McKeithan had to undergo surgery and was placed in the Intensive Care Unit. His injuries would have been fatal had he not been wearing his vest.
