Officer Malin Reynolds

Idaho Falls Police Department ID Saves Club

On June 17, 2011, Idaho Falls Police Officers joined a search for a wanted suspect who fled from the State Police. When they encountered the suspect’s vehicle, the suspect fled and officers pursued to make the arrest. The assailant grabbed a .32 pistol and shot Officer Malin Reynolds in his Second Chance® Summit SM01 Level II vest just one inch from the edge. Officer Reynolds was still able to tackle the assailant to the floor where he and other officers returned fire, killing the assailant. Officer Reynolds was taken to the local hospital as a precaution.

This is Safariland’s first confirmed NIJ 0101.06 ballistic SAVE.

The Second Chance Summit SM01 II vest worn by Officer Reynolds was approved by the National Institute of Justice under the Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06 which established minimum performance requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armor. The standard provides improved performance of body armor so that officers receive adequate protection against those threats likely faced over the next decade. According to the new NIJ-06 standard, body armor must now be able to defend against increased velocities of ammunition calibers to better reflect current street threats and law enforcement duty weapons. These new performance requirements are critical components to improving the life-protecting equipment being used by law enforcement today.
