On June 10, 2011 the Hagerstown Police Department was called out to a hostage situation. The SWAT team attempted to rescue the hostage through the rear of the house. However, the suspect turned on the team and opened fire. Officer Martin Pitsnogle was the shield operator, and his PROTECH® Intruder shield was struck by a .40 S&W round. Of cers returned fire and completed the rescue. The victim unfortunately died a few days later at the hospital.
