West Bloomfield Police Department West Bloomfield MI Saves Club

On September 9, 2012 officers were dispatched to a residence in response to a domestic dispute call and report of a single gunshot, with a possible suicide victim within. Upon arrival family members were evacuated and attempts were made to contact the subject still inside. After repeated attempts to make contact failed, the decision was made to make entry behind a PROTECH® NATO IITM Shield.

The team entered the residence and began to clear the home. As they approached the master bedroom the suspect began firing without warning trough the bedroom wall and door. The suspect was armed with rifles, a handgun and a shotgun. Officers returned fire and pulled back behind the NATO II Shield. Although the PROTECH Shield took multiple hits, including rifle hits, no officer in the stack was injured.

A twenty hour standoff ensued, with hundreds of rounds exchanged between the law enforcement offcers and the barricaded suspect. All means available to end the standoff were employed including the repeated use of chemical munitions, the insertion of several robots for remote viewing, and eventually the deployment of an armored excavator to remove the exterior wall of the home. The suspect was found deceased in the bedroom, later ruled a suicide by the medical examiner.
