Ashenfelter came to a firing stance ordering his assailant to drop his weapon. Instead, he leveled his .22, firing two quick shots, hitting the officer directly over the heart. Ashenfelter returned fire slightly wounding his assailant but not enough to stop the gunman from pumping off another flurry of shots, seven more of which hit Ashenfelter as he dove for cover. Ashenfelter credits his Second Chance® vest for stopping the first and only two slugs that hit the area of his body covered by his armor.
