On October 19, 2012 Officer John Rainey observed a suspicious suspect walking in between two resi- dential homes. He exited his vehicle and headed on foot toward the individual in an effort to question him. As he attempted to locate the suspect at the rear of the residences, he heard movement near the tree line and was shot in the back. He returned fire and a running gun battle ensued.
Officer Rainey continued to advance over a fence and through the trees but lost the suspect. In the commendation letter from the Nicholasville Police Department it was noted, “If not for the fact that he was wearing his issued bullet proof vest, Officer Rainey would have sustained a life threatening or even life ending injury.”
Officer Rainey was wearing an ABA® Xtreme® XT2-9 level II vest.
