On September 16, 2013 an active shooter critical incident took place at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard. The shooter, identified as Aaron Alexis, went on a one hour and nine minute shooting spree that resulted in twelve fatalities. Officers from a host of law enforcement agencies responded and selflessly entered the complex to assist in evacuating the employees and to locate and stop the shooter.
Among the members of the Washington D.C. Emergency Response Team was Tactical Officer Dorian DeSantis. Officer DeSantis and a Park Police officer were clearing the third floor when they encountered the shooter and a gun fight ensued. Officer DeSantis was shot center chest by the assailant but was able to return fire fatally wounding the assailant and ending the threat.
Officer DeSantis discovered after the shooting that the 9mm round was stopped by his PROTECH® Tactical level III Hard Armor Rifle Plate. The protection afforded by his PROTECH Tactical plate was such that he did not even seek treatment at a hospital.
