On December 2, 2013, a Counter Terror Unit took fire from a barricaded suspect when they entered an apartment. The Protech® Tactical Defender Shield was hit by a 12-gauge slug in the viewpoint directly in front of the shield operator’s face, and stopped the round with no injury to the operator.
With less than 5 feet of range from the shot, both members behind the shield received no injury and the unit backed out. Hours later, a single shot was heard. Assuming that the suspect shot himself, the unit re-entered. The suspect began shooting again and the unit returned fire, fatally wounding the assailant.
