Deputy Uvaldo Avilez

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office San Antonio TX Saves Club

On March 6, 2018, deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office were serving a mental
health warrant for a male suspect. While performing a welfare check on the occupants
in the home, the male opened fire with a 5.56 caliber rifle.

The team deploying their PROTECHÒ Tactical Patroller FR shield, took one hit on the shield
and moved to cover on the perimeter. Bexar County SWAT units were called in and a 24-
hour standoff developed.

Hours passed as negotiators unsuccessfully tried to make contact with the man. He later
came out of his home and began firing at the SWAT officers, and the deputies exchanged
gunfire. Eventually, the SWAT team deployed in two stacks, each behind their PROTECH
Tactical NATO 1 shields – both of which took multiple hits on the body and viewports of
the shields.

All shields in this engagement stopped all the rounds directed at the deputies and allowed
them to move to positions of cover. The assailant was subsequently taken into custody.
Two deputies took minor frag injuries but were treated and released.
