On July 13, 2018 Trooper Stephen O’Dell was on patrol when he stopped a vehicle occupied by two men and a woman. One of the male occupants fled the vehicle and opened fire on Trooper O’Dell with a .45 ACP. Trooper O’Dell, even though he was hit by gunfire multiple times, stayed in the fight and returned fire.
One .45 ACP round struck Trooper O’Dell in the chest and was stopped by his Second Chance® SM02 Level II Armor. As it turned out, the assailant was wanted on three separate warrants including one for Home Invasion and another for Felony Criminal Sexual Assault.
Trooper O’Dell was treated at the hospital for the hits off the armor. He has made a full recovery and has returned to full duty. The coroner determined the assailant died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
