Sgt. Mann received his Second Chance® Model Y Vest from his wife as a Christmas gift in 1980. On March 21, 1981, that same vest saved Mann from a 81/2″ switchblade knife. While Mann was checking out several suspected illegal aliens, one of the subjects drove the blade straight into Mann’s upper right abdomen, just below the ribcage. He continued to slash at Mann until Mann was able to retaliate with a swift kick to the subject’s “family jewels”. Mann was free from any injury due to the protection of his vest.
