Officer Shaefer’s partner was in the process of placing a suspect under arrest when the assailant grabbed the officer’s gun. Schaefer exited his unit to come to his partner’s aid when the gunman turned the .38 special on Shaefer and fired. The slug was caught in Schaefer’s Second Chance® vest and one of the six shots returned by Shaefer was caught in the assailant’s head.
