Ketterman was one of two officers called to help subdue a mental patient at a local hospital. The patient was holding pieces of broken glass in his hand threatening to harm himself or anyone trying to stop him. In the struggle to disarm the patient, Ketterman was stabbed in the upper left chest, just to the right of his badge. The glass cut through the shirt but stopped in the first few layers of his Second Chance® armor.
