Officer Tatgenhorst was in pursuit of a moving violator when a St. Bernard ran across his path. Tatgenhorst swerved to miss the dog going into a skid for 150″ before smashing into a culvert, bouncing out and coming to rest across the highway. Somewhere between the first impact and the final stop, Tatgenhorst was thrown from the car. Dr. Long, from Suburban Heights Medical Center, noted the extreme importance of the Second Chance® vest Tatgenhorst was wearing in preventing greater chest and upper torso injury.
