Officer Giacobbe was coming to the end of his stakeout assignment and was checking over the scene before he called it quits for the night. As he walked to the backside of the bar, Giacobbe was attacked by a man with what Giacobbe thought was a piece of lead pipe. He grabbed the “pipe”, bringing it down in front of him when he heard and felt and explosion. The “pipe” was the barrel from a sawed-off .410 shotgun and his Second Chance® vest, complete with black powder burns, took the brunt of the rifled slug. Giacobbe returned fire wounding his attacker.
