Sheriff Yearick was the only lawman wearing body armor while engaging in a gun battle with a “doper”. The armor Yearick was wearing was a Model Y2. The shooting incident involved several lawmen surrounding a house in which the wanted felon had taken refuge. Yearick was making his way around the back of the house when a shot rang out from an elevated position. The doper, firing a .44 magnum rifle, hit Yearick in the back. Before heading for better cover in nearby woods, the doper fired again, seriously wounding a fellow deputy. Four hours after the shooting, deputies cornered and fatally wounded the assailant.
