Officer Heald began to follow a “suspicious person in a motor vehicle.” The driver tried to shake the tail by violating several vehicle code laws. The chase wound up in an orchard with the suspect jumping from his car firing a .38 semi-auto at Heald. Heald fell back with the impact of the first round hit which hit his Model Y body armor. Heald then returned fire striking his assailant whom immediately surrendered his weapon.
