At the time of his accident, Officer Thraen was wearing a Second Chance® Model Y vest. Thraen was also wearing shoulder and lap belts and was severely bruised by the belts because of the force of impact. The outline of the shoulder harness was visible on Thraen’s body, however the bruises stopped where the vest started. The ER doctor and investigating officer stated that “his (Thraen’s) vest prevented serious, if not fatal, internal injuries.”
