Officer Sanders was involved in a shootout with an ex-Marine accused of murder, rape and countless residential robberies and other misdemeanor crimes. On a surveillance of the suspect, Sanders and his partner, Investigator Kivler, met the suspect in a narrow hallway. The suspect, in a kneeling position, fired off 3-4 rounds from his .380 Beretta. One of the bullets pierced Sanders” forearm, exited his elbow continuing into his Second Chance® vest on the right side of his chest. Both lawmen were able to return for striking their assailant seven times.
