On February 8, 1986, while on his way to role call, Officer Nielsen was involved in a three vehicle, head-on collision. Nielsen was not wearing his seat belt, but was wearing his Second Chance® vest. The vest crushed the steering wheel and bent the steering column, but allowed Nielsen to escape virtually unscathed, with only minor contusions to his chest and bruises to his ribs.
