Atkinson was working as a security guard for a housing firm in Raleigh. While on patrol, he spotted a suspicious person walking between two complexes. He followed the suspect and when he came within 25-feet of the person he called, “Halt!” The man stopped but didn’t turn to face Atkinson until he was within an arm’s length of the suspect. Suddenly, the suspect turned and with a lunging motion, placed a 2-inch slash through Atkinson’s uniform shirt, stopping in his Second Chance® vest. The unexpected thrust knocked Atkinson to the ground where he drew his weapon and fired at his assailant running into the night.
