On June 21, 1975, Deputy Sheriff John Pauer was called to the Village of Lima, NY to investigate two hitchhikers. The two subjects, one male and one female were located and after a brief investigation, an arrest was made. At the time of the arrest, both subjects resisted. While attempting to subdue the male suspect Pauer was stabbed in the chest with a knife having a three-inch blade. At the time of the attack Pauer was wearing a Second Chance® vest and did not sustain any injury.
