On the night of May 21, 1973, Simmons, representing his department and several members of the East St. Louis PD were involved in a gun battle. Simmons received a full blast of a 12 ga. shotgun, loaded with 00 buckshot, from a distance of approximately 30 feet. Five of the buckshots hit special agent Simmons in the upper chest. This area was protected by the Second Chance® vest Simmons was wearing and, in the words of his CO, “had undoubtedly saved his life.
