Shortly before midnight, Deputy Sheriff John Buddenbohm was traveling at a high rate of speed on a local highway when another vehicle ran a stop sign and stopped in the middle of the intersection directly in line with Buddenbohm’s patrol car. He hit the other vehicle broadside. The sudden impact threw Buddenbohm into his steering column. The K-30 metal plate, worn in conjunction with his Second Chance® soft armor, was bent like a “potato chip.” Hospital doctors agreed that without the vest and chest plate, Buddenbohm would have been impaled by the steering column.
