Officer Atkinson and his partner were in pursuit of a vehicle that they observed running a stop sign. The violator led the officers on a chase when he refused to stop for their blue light and siren. When the chase vehicle rounded a curve in the road they skidded into a ditch striking a culvert. Atkinson received several broken bones in his leg, but, according to Dr. Andrew at Raleigh Orthopaedic Clinic, Atkinson’s “bulletproof vest prevented him from having any chest injury.”
