Puckett and another county officer arrived at a residence to serve committal papers to the resident. The subject met them on the porch and then went into the house returning with a 12ga shotgun. Puckett was shot in the chest and side from about ten feet. The two lawmen returned fire, killing the subject. Puckett was wearing a Second Chance® vest that caught the No. 71³2 birdshot.
