Officer Graves was a member of the Vice Enforcement Unit and was in the process of operating a “sting”. As Graves and his partner moved in for an arrest, the suspect pulled out a .38 handgun and began firing at both officers. Diaz was hit three times, in the stomach, chest and a grazing round to his head. Graves” partner was killed in the shootout. The shooter was killed in a hail of gunfire from the other officers.
