Officer Washington was in a contingent of law officers assigned to create a “police presence” to a projects area of Chicago during the celebration welcoming in the New Year. Around 10pm a shot rang out and a slug deflected off an outside wall striking Washington in the lower back. The slug penetrated his leather jacket but stopped in his 322ZII department issued Second Chance® armor. An immediate search of the area was negative and the round, believed to be a small caliber, most likely a .22 was never found.
