On routine patrol the early morning on April 16, 1977, unknown assailants ambushed Officer Vance. Gunfire shattered the windshield, hit two tires, the grill, hood and roof of his police unit. While scrambling out of the car, Officer Vane was struck in the back. Cane didn’t know he was hit until he examined his Second Chance® vest. Reaching into the back carrier, he felt the bullet lodged in the vest layers.
