Officer Jose responded to a request for back up from a fellow officer who had been shot at by an assailant. When Jose arrived, the suspect jumped from behind a parked vehicle and ran to the passenger side of his patrol unit and began firing rounds through the window. One of the rounds struck Officer Jose on the back panel of his Second Chance® vest. Although shot by the suspect, Officer Jose was able to get away and again assist in the chase. A running gun battle continued for approximately five blocks. The suspect was subsequently fatally wounded.Wood River Chief of Police, James Schneider, commented that Officer Jose’s Second Chance® vest quite possibly saved his life that day.
