Officer Helms was on routine patrol in his marked squad car. He noticed a pick-up truck parked in the middle of the road. He thought the motorist was stranded. Helms pulled over his squad car, got out and approached the vehicle. As he asked the driver for his license, the driver started shooting. Officer Helms was hit with a .22 caliber revolver on his Second Chance® Monarch Body Armor and trauma plate. It was never determined why the suspect was parked in the middle of the road, nor why he opened fire on Officer Helms. Officer Helms said “I was told that the shot I received would have been fatal had I not been wearing my Second Chance® armor. I am grateful that I was able to come home to my wife and 2 smallchildren.”
We welcome Officer Kevin Helms, SAVE #857, to The Safariland Group SAVES CLUB®.
