Deputy Spurgeon and two other deputies went to a residence in a trailer park to follow up a felony assault investigation. The officers noticed the trailer door was open and walked toward it. The suspect was behind the door and tried to slam the door and started shooting at the officers from inside the trailer. Deputy Spurgeon was hit on his Second Chance® vest by a Jennings .380 semi-automatic handgun. Fortunately he was able to return fire, wounding the suspect. Lt. Robert Van Pelt of the Harris County Sheriff Department said, “Thankfully, the deputy had his vest on, which saved his life, and he is going to be all right.”
