Officer McCarthy, a 29-year-old new father, was on street patrol at 2:50am and was broadsided by a speeding drunk driver as he attempted to make a U-turn on a 2-lane highway. This was the driver’s 2nd offence for OUIL.McCarthy was pinned unconscious in his car for over 30 minutes and had to be extracted by the jaws-of-life and airlifted to the nearest medical facility. He suffered a broken pelvis and expects to be off work for at least one year.According to his physician, McCarthy was very fortunate to have been wearing his Second Chance® armor as the impact of the accident literally bent the steering column and the computer console.
