Officer Daniel Reig was dispatched to the home of a Carnegie Mellon University Professor after an anonymous call reporting a domestic disturbance.As they approached the house, the suspect came to the doorway and shouted for the officers to leave. The wife of the suspect came to the door and told the police officers that everything was OK. Then the suspect threw his wife to the floor inside the house. At that point the officers attempted to enter the home. The suspect then fired a .44 S&W at Reig hitting him in the chest at point blank range.Reig was able to get up and return fire. With the help of fellow officers, the suspect was wounded and taken into custody. A nursing supervisor at the hospital where Reig was treated stated, “The police officer is going to be OK. He had his vest on. He would have been dead without it.”
