Officer Maloney was on duty in the early morning hours and was on route in his Patrol Car – a 1999 Ford Explorer – to pick up a prisoner from another town. He was entering a limited access highway on the entrance ramp was hit head-on by a drunk driver. Both drivers were severly injured, but both did survive. It was later determined that the driver that hit Maloney had consumed at least a 12 pack of beer.Maloney was trapped inside his Ford Explorer and had to be extricated and airlifted to the nearest medical facility. He suffered a fractured femur and dislocated hip. He also had to have surgery to remove a protion of ruptured large intestine.The attending physician stated that Brian’s vest was severly dented but it did save his life. He indicated his chest injuries would have been much worse if not fatal if Maloney had not been wearing his Second Chance® armor.
