Deputy Smith was on patrol responding to a domestic disturbance call. Upon arrival he was immediately confronted by a very agitated subject who threw a large piece of metal through the windshield and then threw two hammers at the Deputy. The subject then closed on the Deputy and attempted to stab him with a screwdriver. The screwdriver penetrated the deputy’s shirt and was stopped by the vest. Smith was then able to fire his service revolver hitting the subject and preventing further assault.According to his commanding officer, “There is no doubt his Second Chance® vest, at the very least prevented a serious stabbing, but more likely saved his life.”
