Officer Helton was on routine patrol when he spotted a burglar trying to break into a store. The thief bolted when he realized he was observed. Helton chased and caught him. The suspect then shot Helton. He said he felt like someone had walloped him in the side with a baseball bat.He was able to make it back to his patrol car and was taken to the hospital. An abrasion the size of a half-dollar marks where the bullet would have pierced his body. He appeared at a news conference to salute his 4-1/2 pound best friend – his Second Chance Armor®…”The vest saved my life” stated Helton. “It’s going to be a great Christmas, all around.”
