Police were called to the home on a report of a knife-wielding man. Suspect was also known to have access to weapons including a high-powered rifle. Neighbors also indicated that the suspect had been drinking. Negotiations lasted more than three hours while the suspect had barricaded himself in a crawl space. After a while, officers stormed the home and the suspect fired a handgun through a wall. A Thornton Police spokesman said he believed that because Reeves was wearing his tactical vest, he was definitely saved from serious injury or worse.
