While investigating an accident shortly after midnight on August 6, 1977, Officer Jesse Wood and one of the individuals involved in the accident were struck by an intoxicated driver. Wood was thrown over the car hitting the windshield and shattering it. His left leg was broken and his left shoulder dislocated. The doctor in the emergency room said if it had not been for Wood’s Second Chance vest, his chest would have been crushed.
