On December 2nd, 2023, Sergeant Mauricio Valle of the Houston Police Department was in his vehicle on surveillance when he was ambushed and shot multiple times by an assailant armed with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun loaded with Hornady Critical Defense ammo. He was hit in both of his arms and both of his legs as well as on his Safariland® SX™ SX02 level IIIA armor and Safariland® Plates worn in a Safariland® SHIFT 360™, including hits to the cummerbund. The assailant moved from the passenger side of Sgt. Valle’s car, around the back and approached the driver’s side to finish the assault when Sgt. Valle, though wounded, exited his vehicle and returned fire ending the threat. Officers applied tourniquets to Sgt. Valle’s arms and legs at the scene, and he was transported to the hospital. He has recovered from the hits to his arms and legs and is back on full duty.
