On May 27, 2018 Special Agent Bryce Stewart and his partner were performing a welfare check on an individual parked in a vehicle in a remote part of their patrol area. As they approached the vehicle, Special Agent Stewart’s partner observed a revolver on the dashboard directly in front of the subject in the driver’s seat. The partner requested the driver to separate from the firearm. Instead the subject grabbed the revolver, leveled it at Special Agent Stewart and opened fire.
During the exchange of gunfire, Special Agent Stewart was hit in the rib cage. His Safariland® Summit™ SM01 Level IIIA armor stopped the .357 magnum round, allowing Special Agent Stewart to reposition and continue to engage the suspect. Both agents were able to return fire and end the threat.
