On November 20, 2020, Trooper John Lennon with the Massachusetts State Police stopped a driver for an equipment violation. There were two occupants in the vehicle and as Trooper Lennon approached the driver’s side, the driver immediately opened fire with a 9mm handgun. The 9mm round traveled through Trooper Lennon’s right hand and hit him in his upper right chest. The vehicle then fled the scene. Trooper Lennon was transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was treated for the wound to his hand. His Safariland® SX® SX02 Level II ballistic panel stopped the Liberty Defense 50gr JHP 9mm round that struck his chest.
The suspect was located in the Bronx and US Marshals attempted to serve an arrest warrant, but the suspect again immediately opened fire hitting two of the US Marshals who returned fire ending the assailant. Both US Marshals are recovering from the incident. Trooper Lennon hopes to return to full duty as soon as physical therapy to his hand is completed.
